Avanti
of course, means "forward", and the same applies to Tom Kellogg.
Tom remains an active practitioner of form-follows-function design.
My father's Avanti has always remained close to my heart. I was
thrilled when Tom Kellogg was hired as the design consultant for
the new Avanti Motor Corporation. I knew Tom was most qualified
to update this modern design classic for the 21st Century. Laurence
Loewy, CEO Loewy Design
In 1961, Raymond
Loewy telephoned to ask if Tom Kellogg might be interested in
designing a new "sports car" with him. The Avanti project would
be the start of a lifelong relationship with Loewy and that special
car.
Kellogg then
formally joined Loewy's New York office in 1962-63, when he ultimately
supervised the final design of the "Avanti-themed" standard Studebakers
planned for 1964. But South Bend was running out of money, Loewy's
auto clients were dwindling, so Kellogg soon returned to California
to begin a varied and successful freelance career. Work highlights
include numerous product package designs, exterior proposals for
Roll-Royce and Porche, motorhome and pickup camper-shell designs,
a line of dinner-ware for Wedgwood china, space-capsule interior
color studies for NASA, and the shuttlecraft for the first Star
Trek TV series.
